In 2010, the Society's Committee gave thought as to how it could assist any Old Columbans who found themselves unable to send their children to the College due to financial constraints
After much detailed consultation, research and discussion, along with support from the then Warden Lindsay Haslett, the Bursary Fund sub-committee, under the chairmanship of the late David O'Morchoe, was established and in May 2011 The Old Columban Society Bursary Fund was launched. The Society's first bursary was awarded in September 2012.
In 2015 it was agreed that, subject to available funds, the eligibility criteria should be expanded to include the grandchildren of Old Columbans.
Thanks to the exceptional generosity of some Old Columbans, especially in difficult times, along with the resultant growth of the Fund, the number of recipients has steadily grown
Each year the chair of the Society's Bursary Fund sub-committee consults with the Warden of the College and agrees on the suitable recipients for that year.
Due to the fallout from Covid-19, many more Old Columban families have found themselves under severe financial pressure. In 2020, owing to these unusual and exceptional circumstances, the Society decided to avail of a portion of the Fund's rainy day reserves, with the result that the Fund is now significantly assisting 12 Old Columban families in their time of need. Some effort by a small society!
However, for the Fund to sustain both its current allocation of bursaries, as well as for any future allocations, we rely solely upon the generosity of our donors.
If 200 Old Columbans donated just €10 per month, €24,000 per annum would be raised. With thousands of Society members, just think what we could do! The possibilities are endless.
If you have not yet had a chance to respond to our widely published appeals, we urge you to do so.
The Fund is of such critical and tangible benefit to Old Columbans and in turn to the College itself. It also provides the possibility for future generations of Columbans, for whom it might not otherwise be possible, to avail of the wonderful experience and education which the College has to offer
